I believe this quote means that if you choose the wrong you won't feel good afterward, you'll feel guilty. For example if you let your friend copy your homework at first you might say that you were just helping a friend, but then when you actually think of it letting her/he copy was choosing the wrong and you'll have it in back of your mind that you might get caught and both have to pay negative consequences.
