Optometrist
Duties and Responsibilities:
Optometrists
treat vision problems by diagnosing the problem and then they prescribe eyeglasses,
contact lenses, or vision therapy. Some optometrists may specialize in
industrial vision safety, treatment of related learning disabilities, and
environmental vision care. Optometrists may not write medical prescriptions,
treat diseases, or perform surgeries. Most of the optometrists are self-employed,
but some may work for hospitals, government, agencies,
optical manufacturers,
or universities.
Average Salary:
$78,000
Education:
Students
should take the most challenging high school courses (AP or IB) available in
math, science, and English. At least two years of college in a pre-professional
program is required before starting optometry school. Optometry school is four
years long. After getting their degree
they must pass state exams to be able to start practice.
I don’t
think I would like to become an optometrist because I don’t find it very
interesting for me and because I really don’t want a career in treating vision
problems.
